Based: Royston, Hertfordshire

Salary: £40,000 - £45,000 DOE + Bonus & Benefits

Shipping & Logistics Team Leader (ideally DGSA)

My client is an industry-leading manufacturer who is looking to recruit a Logistics Team Leader into their in-house Supply Chain Team. This newly created position, based in the North Hertfordshire town of Royston, brings together the shipping activities of three divisions of the organisation. This is an exciting time to join the business as they are in the early stages of transformation and there is the potential to make a real impact within this well respected company. Reporting into the Supply Chain Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading the Shipping Team (8 direct reports) to deliver outstanding customer satisfaction through developing robust systems to ensure all shipments to and from the business are conducted safely, efficiently, accurately, on time and within budget (approximately £5M).

Applications are invited from experienced Supply Chain, Logistics, and Shipping practitioners who have held team leadership / supervisory / management positions. Those who have previously worked within a heavy manufacturing and/or high volume, process driven environments (i.e. automotive, chemical, FMCG, food, agro-chemical, pharmaceutical, refining, or similar) are desirable but this is not essential. Candidates who have experience of dangerous or hazardous materials are of particular interest - especially those who have qualified as a DGSA.

Key responsibilities:

  • Ensuring shipments of all dangerous goods are carried out in compliance with the appropriate legislation and safety standards
  • Monitoring and managing deliveries for the business
  • Communicating, expediting and escalating within the operation team and management in order to ensure a very high level of delivery performance
  • Developing customer delivery performance metrics for measuring, monitoring and reporting performance. Identifying and documenting improvement plans
  • Managing all shipping related customer complaints, analysing and identifying root cause and developing and implementing permanent corrective actions
  • Developing and implementing a plan to integrate the shipping functions of three business units to deliver significant improvements in productivity and flexibility
  • Developing a highly skilled and flexible team in the shipping department, ensuring that a training matrix is in place, and that the team develop their IT, shipping and logistics skills on both a collective and individual basis
  • Developing and implementing shipping initiatives to deliver significant logistical cost reductions
  • Managing, troubleshooting and problem solving inbound and import shipment activities as appropriate
  • Supporting the Supply Chain Team with the structured collection, analysis and reporting of data
  • Using LEAN tools and methodologies to deliver efficiencies in the supply chain function

Candidates must have excellent organisational and communication skills, both verbal and written, and have a proven track record of working well in a fast paced Supply Chain team and successfully leading and developing a team. Applicants must be able to demonstrate experience and knowledge of Supply Chain processes, systems, ISO9001, ISO18001, and ideally interfacing ERP business systems. Candidates should have completed formal training or hold qualifications in a relevant discipline (ideally Supply Chain or Business related) and a DGSA qualification is very desirable. You also need to have a high level of numeracy in order to be comfortable making precise mathematical calculations to support negotiations.
