GREENBELT, Md., July 27, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Imagine what an incredible opportunity it is for an engineering major to work on an actual spacecraft, or for a student who is interested in cryogenics to conduct significant research in a cryogenics testing facility. At NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., located just outside of Washington, D.C., these dreams are becoming reality for some exceptional students this summer. These life-changing internships turn into "out-of-this-world" experiences as the students intern for six to ten weeks, doing hands-on research or engineering alongside NASA experts.

One hundred sixty-eight college and high school students from the mid-Atlantic U.S. are about two-thirds of the way through their participation in Goddard's 2012 Summer Internship Program. Young men and women from cities such as Washington, DC; Salisbury, Greenbelt, and Baltimore, Md.; and Fairfax, Arlington, and McLean, Va., have joined approximately 500 other students from 42 of the 50 U.S. states as well as Puerto Rico.

Each selected intern was placed with a NASA mentor and provided with scientific or engineering research opportunities that matched the student's educational interests and background. Their assigned work may include equipment design and testing, experimental data collection and processing, computer software development or fieldwork. Many projects are at the cutting edge of science and technology, and all are important to future NASA research efforts.
