Additive manufacturing, commonly referred as 3D printing, is a rapidly trending industrial process. The technology brings new opportunities and more agility compared to traditional manufacturing processes. Because it can create 3D objects by adding layer upon layer of material rather than by removing surplus of it (ex: cutting from a mold), additive manufacturing produces little wastage throughout the entire production process.
In this episode, discover two different additive manufacturing processes used by Safran: laser powder bed fusion and laser projection. These processes are used to manufacture several pieces for aircrafts engines. Additive manufacturing has many advantages: it enables the conception of complex shapes in a single block, it is more resource-efficient than conventional methods, and is ideal for rapid prototyping.
