Fuel for Thought S1 E7: Apollo 11

Aerojet Rocketdyne shares everything you need to know about Apollo 11 on this next episode of Fuel for Thought. Apollo 11 is the legendary mission where three brave astronauts landed on the Moon and made history. Heres what you need to know:

0:00 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the historic mission to land humans on the moon. July 16, 1969 a mighty Saturn V rocket powered by 5 Aerojet Rocketdyne F-1 engines sent the Apollo 11 mission hurdling toward the Moon.

0:20 Four days later Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to step foot on the lunar surface, marking the occasion with Armstrongs famous words One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind. Aerojet Rocketdyne helped enable that historic step and were now helping NASA prepare for humans return to the Moon and eventually on to Mars.

0:49 Given a bold declaration by President Kennedy to land a human on the Moon by the end of the 1960s, NASA worked tirelessly to develop, test and launch the Apollo space program. Aerojet Rocketdyne propulsion systems powered nearly every phase of this successful mission which achieved that very goal: Apollo 11.

1:08 In total, there were 63 rocket engines built by Aerojet Rocketdyne for the mission from the small bipropellant R4D engines on the lunar lander to the mighty F-1 and J-2 engines on the enormous Saturn V launch vehicle. The most famous of these engines, of course, being the five F-1 engines located at the bottom of the Saturn V

1:27 These engines provided a combined 7.5M pounds of thrust to the rocket. The F-1 engine remains the most powerful single chamber rocket engine ever flown to this day. Were now building on our Apollo legacy to take astronauts faster and further into deep space than ever before. In fact we are working with NASA to take the first woman and the next man to the Moon by 2024.

1:53 The Apollo program led to some of the greatest achievements in our history and with the Nations renewed interest in space, Aerojet Rocketdyne is ready to power us back to the Moon, on to Mars and beyond.
