NASA Announces Exploration Design Challenge

NASA Astronaut Rex Walheim and Lockheed-Martin Orion engineer Heather McKay announce the five semi-finalist high school teams in the Exploration Design Challenge from the Johnson Space Center. Student participants learned about space radiation and proposed an engineering solution to protect humans and hardware on long-duration missions. The teams' designs will undergo further engineering review at Langley Research Center and a winner will be announced in April. The winning team will have its design flown on Orion's maiden voyage, Exploration Flight Test-1, in December 2014.
